About The Department
The Department of Physics established in 2016 under University School of
Sciences has progressed a lot since its inception. The Department started its
journey was three programs; M. Sc. in Physics, B. Sc. (Hons.) in Physics,
and B. Sc. in Physical Sciences, which now offers six programs; PhD, M. Sc.
in Physics, M. Sc. in Astronomy and Astrophysics, B. Sc. (Hons.) in Physics,
B. Sc. in Astronomy and Astrophysics, and B. Sc. in Physical Sciences.
The curricula of the programs are designed as per the UGC guidelines
following Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) to meet the requirements of
expertise in the field of Research, Academia and Industry. The curricula for
both UG and PG programs provide students with a strong foundation in the
core concepts of physics, while also allowing them to specialize in areas that
are most relevant to their interests and career goals.
There are some key points that are taken into account while designing the
curricula as mentioned below:
Core concepts:
The curricula cover the core concepts of physics, including
classical mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, quantum
mechanics, statistical mechanics, and modern physics. These topics provide
the foundation for all areas of physics and are covered in depth.
Mathematics:
Physics relies heavily on mathematical concepts and
techniques, so the curricula put a strong emphasis on mathematics,
including calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, and complex
analysis.
Laboratory Work:
Physics is an experimental science, and laboratory work
is an essential component of any physics program. Our curriculum includes
a significant amount of laboratory work as per the guidelines of UGC, that
including hands-on experiments and data analysis.
Electives:
The students in physics program often have diverse interests and
career goals. The curriculum is designed in such a way that it includes a
range of elective courses that allow students to specialize in areas of physics
that are most relevant to their interests and goals.
Interdisciplinary Courses: As the Physics is closely related to many other fields, including engineering, materials science, and biophysics, etc., so, our curriculum provides the opportunities for students to explore
interdisciplinary subjects that are relevant to their interests.
Computational Skills:Modern physics research relies heavily on
computational tools and techniques. So, the curriculum is designed to
include courses that improve the computational skills of the students, such
as programming, numerical methods, and data analysis.
Communication Skills: Physics is a collaborative field, and communication skills are essential for success. Our curriculum includes opportunities for students to develop communication skills, such as presenting research results, writing reports, and participating in group projects. To improve
these skills we provide essential component of English language as an International mode of communication, seminar, project work for UG and Dissertation work for PG students.
The students get ample exposure through the group discussions, seminars,
and lectures by the experts from different fields visiting from reputed
Institutions in the Country and abroad. In addition to this the Rayat Bahra
University is an active member of Chandigarh Region Innovation and
Knowledge Cluster (CRIKC), which is a Group/Cluster of the Institutions
such as Panjab University, IISER, NIPER, etc. The Cluster is created with
the intension to share the Laboratory and other facilities available in their
campus for the students of the members Institutions.
The Department of Physics offers the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in
the area of Nuclear Physics, High Energy Physics, Material Science, and
Astrophysics. A student can choose any area/field (subject) of his/her
interest.
The Department of Physics provides good working environment to the
Scholar as well as Faculty to carry out their research work. If you are highly
motivated and eager to learn the nature and natural Science (Physics), then,
you are at the right place, at Rayat Bahra University, Mohali.
